Octopus Energy Tariff Comparison

Tariff and pricing data comes from Considered's managed Octopus Energy tariff catalogue. The catalogue is refreshed automatically from Octopus Energy's public data and stores current regional pricing for all 14 Great Britain electricity regions. This means your browser no longer has to make dozens of separate Octopus product and rate requests every time you compare tariffs.

For tariffs with a single flat unit rate, the published unit rate is used directly. For time-of-use tariffs, the managed catalogue stores the relevant regional rates and recent interval pricing. If you enter the percentage of your electricity that you can use off-peak, two-rate tariffs such as Go and Intelligent Octopus Go are costed using that personal split between their cheap and standard rates. If you leave it blank, the tool uses the neutral duration-weighted planning average instead. Agile continues to use recent half-hourly pricing, while three-rate tariffs such as Cosy and Flux retain a neutral blended estimate because a single off-peak percentage cannot accurately describe all three price periods.

In import mode, estimated annual cost includes the standing charge and your entered annual electricity use. Where you've supplied an off-peak percentage and the tariff has a clear two-rate structure, the tool splits that consumption between the cheap and standard rates before calculating the annual cost. Rates are inclusive of VAT. The estimate excludes welcome credit, referral credit, Warm Home Discount and account-specific adjustments.

In export mode, this compares Octopus's solar export/outgoing tariffs instead — what you're paid per kWh sent back to the grid. Estimated annual income = unit export rate × your entered annual exported kWh. Export tariffs don't carry a standing charge, and most require a smart export meter or a compatible inverter reading, which is not separately checked here.

Both modes cover domestic electricity tariffs only — gas and business tariffs aren't included. Agile, Go, Intelligent Go, Cosy, Flux and Tracker (and their export equivalents) all require a compatible smart meter capable of half-hourly readings, flagged on each card. Prepayment-meter tariffs are flagged too.

Go, Intelligent Go, Cosy and Flux cards show their cheap and expensive rates separately where the managed catalogue has structured regional pricing. Their normal daily cheap-period timings are also shown in plain English. Intelligent Go, Cosy and Flux have additional eligibility requirements, such as a compatible EV, heat pump, or solar and battery system, and these are flagged on the relevant cards. Agile changes every 30 minutes and therefore has no single fixed cheap window to model in the same way.

By default, Intelligent Go, Cosy and Flux are hidden from the results (and from the "cheapest overall" ranking) since most visitors don't have the EV, heat pump, or solar-plus-battery they need. The toggles above the results reveal them: turn one on to see that tariff join the comparison and, if it's cheaper, become the new "cheapest overall" — a quick way to check what having an EV, heat pump or battery would actually do to your bill, without committing to anything. If you tell the tool what you're currently paying and it's one of these three, the matching toggle switches on automatically, since being on it already means you qualify. The "already with Octopus?" dropdown always lists every live tariff regardless of these toggles, so you can select your actual current tariff either way.

Two further toggles under "Your meter" work differently, because they're not about optional extra tariffs but about which product line applies to you. Prepayment tariffs are entirely separate products from their non-prepayment equivalents — you can only actually be on one or the other — so "I have a prepayment meter" flips the results to show only prepayment tariffs rather than adding them alongside everything else; by default, the comparison shows non-prepayment tariffs. "I don't have a smart meter yet" hides any tariff that requires one (Agile, Go, Intelligent Go, Cosy, Flux, Tracker and their export equivalents) since around two-thirds of UK homes already have a smart meter, this is off by default. Selecting your current tariff from the "already with Octopus?" dropdown sets both of these automatically to match what you're actually on.

If you tell the tool what you're currently paying (or currently getting paid, in export mode), that figure is compared the same way — standing charge and usage or export included — against the cheapest or best-paying live tariff found. It's only ever as accurate as the rate you enter, so use a recent bill or your Octopus online account rather than guessing.

A card at the end of the results explains battery "grid services" add-ons — Octopus Charge Pack and Axle Energy — which pay a compatible battery owner extra for occasionally letting a company dispatch it to support the grid, on top of whichever tariff is shown above. Like the peak/off-peak window data, this is fixed text sourced from each provider's own pages rather than pulled live, since neither exposes an API for it.

This is an independent estimate for comparison only, not a quote — check the exact tariff, its terms and any current switching offer on Octopus's own site before you commit.

v1.11 — Tariff ranking can now account for how much electricity you can deliberately use during cheap off-peak periods. Enter an optional percentage and two-rate tariffs such as Octopus Go and Intelligent Octopus Go are costed using your own cheap/standard usage split rather than a generic time-weighted average. Three-rate tariffs such as Cosy and Flux retain a neutral blended estimate until a fuller usage profile is available. Also migrated tariff pricing to Considered's centrally managed Octopus tariff catalogue and added an Axle Energy referral card for compatible battery owners.

v1.10 — Added a new card at the end of the results explaining battery "grid services" add-ons — Octopus Charge Pack and Axle Energy — which pay you extra for letting a company occasionally dispatch a compatible home battery to support the grid, separate from whichever tariff you're on. Covers the guaranteed minimum payment, how each works, compatible battery brands, and the downsides worth knowing before signing up (they're mutually exclusive on one battery, Charge Pack ties you to specific Octopus tariffs and hands over daily scheduling too, neither publishes battery-cycling/warranty guidance). Like the peak/off-peak window data, this is hand-maintained from the providers' own pages rather than pulled live, since neither publishes an API for it.

v1.9 — Added two further toggles under "Your meter": "I have a prepayment meter" and "I don't have a smart meter yet". Prepayment tariffs are a separate product line, not an add-on, so that toggle flips which set of tariffs is shown rather than adding to the list — non-prepayment tariffs show by default. The smart-meter toggle hides anything that needs one (Agile, Go, Intelligent Go, Cosy, Flux, Tracker), and is off by default since most UK homes already have a smart meter. Selecting your current tariff from the "already with Octopus?" dropdown now sets both automatically, on top of the existing EV/heat pump/battery auto-detection from v1.8. The hidden-tariffs message above the results now covers all five toggles, not just the equipment ones.

v1.8 — Intelligent Go, Cosy and Flux are now hidden from the results by default, since most visitors don't have the EV, heat pump or solar-plus-battery they need — there's no point seeing a tariff you can't actually switch to. New toggles above the results ("I have an EV" / "I have a heat pump" / "I have solar + a battery") bring them back in, so you can check what having one of these would actually do to your bill without committing to anything. Selecting one of these three as your current tariff switches the matching toggle on automatically. The "already with Octopus?" dropdown still lists every live tariff regardless, so your actual current tariff is always there to pick.

v1.7 — Simplified the off-peak/peak window info added in v1.6: each windowed tariff card now leads with a plain "X hours off-peak" (or "X hours cheap") badge, and the note underneath now states the duration in words before the exact times — e.g. "6 hours off-peak, every night: 23:30–05:30" rather than just the times on their own.

v1.6 — Go, Intelligent Go, Cosy and Flux cards now show the peak and off-peak rate separately (not just the blended average), plus the actual daily cheap/expensive windows — e.g. Intelligent Go's 23:30–05:30 off-peak period. Intelligent Go, Cosy and Flux also get an orange badge and a plain-English note when they have a genuine eligibility requirement to join — a compatible EV, a heat pump, or solar plus a battery — since these aren't switches everyone can actually make. When "predictable" is selected as what matters most, these four now also get a note that their cheap window is fixed at the same time every day, separate from whether the rate itself is fixed.

v1.5 — Fixed a follow-on issue from the v1.4 Octopus Zero exclusion: a visitor who'd loaded the tool shortly before v1.4 went live could still see Octopus Zero for up to 3 hours afterwards, because tariff data is cached in the browser and the cache wasn't aware the filtering rules had changed. The cache now carries a version tag, so a rule change like this invalidates any older cached result immediately rather than waiting out its cache window.

v1.4 — Excluded Octopus's "Zero" tariffs (Octopus Zero Import/Export) from the comparison. These show as £0/kWh with no standing charge in Octopus's public product list, which made them appear to always win as "cheapest" — but they're restricted to homes already registered in Octopus's Zero Bills new-build program (with solar, battery and often a heat pump pre-installed as part of the property) and capped by a fair-use import allowance, not something an existing customer can switch to. Everything else in the comparison is unaffected.

v1.3 — The "already with Octopus?" comparison now lives in the results, as a dropdown of the live tariffs just fetched for your region — pick yours and your unit rate, standing charge and (for Agile, Go, Cosy, Flux and Tracker) the peak/off-peak split are filled in automatically, no bill or app needed. Legacy or closed tariffs that no longer appear in Octopus's live product list can still be compared by choosing "enter manually" from the same dropdown. Works in both import and export mode.

v1.2 — Added a way for existing Octopus customers to check whether they're on the best available rate: an optional step where you enter what you're currently paying (or currently getting paid, in export mode) from a recent bill or the Octopus app, and the results show a direct comparison against the cheapest — or best-paying — live tariff found, with an estimated saving (or extra income) if switching would help, or a clear "you're already on a competitive rate" if it wouldn't.

v1.1 — Added a solar export/outgoing tariff comparison as a second mode, alongside the original import comparison — toggle at the top of the tool. Fixed a bug where the results section was inheriting a "sticky" positioning rule meant for a different tool's two-column layout, causing it to stay pinned on screen and cover the referral banner and links underneath it while scrolling. Added a Reset button, and a visible version number in the hero, which was missing at launch.

v1.0 — Initial release. Live comparison of every currently available Octopus Energy domestic electricity tariff for a chosen UK grid region, fetched directly from Octopus's public API, ranked by estimated annual cost for the entered usage.
